The freshest, most surprising content about how to quit drinking is on Medium.
Kristi Coulter’s viral piece Enjoli introduced me to this platform as a reader. It is a scathing and unapologetic critique of the culture that sells women booze as self-care. Later I found Gillian May who writes excellent pieces about the intersection of addiction and mental health. Breaking the Loyalty to Generational Alcoholism covers ancestral addiction with a lightness of touch that keeps me returning to her page.
Why I Chose to Kick Booze to the Curb (Hint: It isn’t alcoholism) by Taylor Garland is another classic on the sometimes divisive question of sobriety, and the outdated idea that only alcoholics need to quit booze. And Benya Clark regularly writes powerful posts about Why He’ll Never Go Back to Alcohol either.
These writers helped me to understand that I didn’t need to have a rock bottom to quit drinking, and basically saved my life. Now I pass the lessons on in Beautiful Hangover where I publish stories from other sober(ish) writers too.
