Before I got sober I used to read tens of thousands of words on the subject of sobriety. I was desperate for advice and reassurance and hope. I wanted to know that the effort I was making to stay sober was going to pay off. I wanted proof that the struggle would be worth it.

So here I am to provide this for you.

Because the barefaced truth is that for me, the transition was extremely difficult and extremely positive. Since booze was the cause of many of my problems, life got a whole lot simpler and more peaceful once I managed to quit.

When alcohol no longer works for you — or not as reliably as you’d like — then you have to find an alternative way to do things. You get the opportunity to find new coping strategies and transform your life. You might even find that getting sober is one of the best things that you’ve done for yourself in decades.

So, whether you are trying to get sober, developing a more mindful drinking habit or beating yourself up after a relapse, here are four things to remember as you fight on to make your life better.
